Glossary of Common Telecoms Acronyms

  • DC – Data centre
    A networked computer/storage facility used to hold, process, and disperse data. Often used for data relating to an application or service.
  • DECT – Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications
    Radio technology used to create wireless voice devices.
  • EFM – Ethernet in the First Mile
    Leased lines that provide symmetrical bandwidth (the speed is the same upstream and downstream).
  • FTTC – Fibre To The Cabinet
    Connectivity that is based on the combination of fibre optic and copper cabling.
  • IM – Instant Messaging
    Online message sent/received in real time over the internet.
  • IP – Internet Protocol
    Standard rules for sending & receiving data via the Internet.
  • ISDN – Integrated Services Digital Network
    Standards for sending voice, video, and data via telephone lines.
  • LAN – Local Area Network
    A computer network covering a small area.
  • MPLS – Multi Protocol Label Switching
    A technique used to carry data on a telecommunications network. Data packets are labelled when entering the network and follow paths based on the label given.
  • PBX – Public Branch Exchange
    A private telephone network used in a company.
  • PoE – Power over Ethernet
    Technology allowing necessary electrical current for devices to be carried via data lines.
  • PSTN – Public Switched Telephone Network
    The international telephone system that carries voice data.
  • S4B – Skype for Business
    UC platform – developed by Microsoft – used for business communications such as video conferences and IM.
  • SIP – Session Initiation Protocol
    The protocol used for initiating voice communication via the Internet.
  • UC – Unified Communications
    Integration of communication services such as IM, voice, and video conferencing.
  • VoIP – Voice over Internet Protocol
    Technology allowing calls to be made via the Internet and other IP networks.
  • WAN – Wide Area Network
    A network covering a large geographic area. It connects multiple LANs.
  • WLAN – Wireless Local Area Network
    LAN where devices are connected using radio waves rather than cables.
